Beyond the ordinary

The BLACOMO Journey: From Humble Beginnings to Black Consciousness Movement.

The journey of BLACOMO — Black Consciousness Movement Sierra Leone began from a humble beginning in 1992 in Central Freetown, Sierra Leone. It started with a desire to discover who we are, where we come from, and the importance of understanding and protecting our rich African cultural heritage.

From the beginning, our focus was on Black Consciousness—developing knowledge of self, strengthening cultural identity, and learning about the history, struggles, achievements, and contributions of African people throughout the world. We began studying the lives and teachings of great Black leaders who encouraged African people to believe in themselves, stand with dignity, seek knowledge, and work together for progress.

BLACOMO’s early journey was also deeply connected to the rediscovery and appreciation of our African ancestral traditions, customs, values, and heritage. We understood that knowing our history was important because a people who understand their past are better prepared to shape their future.

Our study of African history inspired us to value principles such as self-respect, courage, responsibility, discipline, justice, compassion, and service to humanity. We learned that Black Consciousness is not simply about recognizing our identity—it is also about developing the character, knowledge, and responsibility needed to uplift ourselves and our communities.

Our Commitment to Unity and Togetherness

From the beginning, BLACOMO understood that lasting progress cannot be achieved through division. We therefore promote unity, togetherness, cooperation, mutual respect, and love for humanity.

Our motto, “Togetherness,” represents our belief that communities become stronger when people recognize their shared humanity and work toward common goals.

We encourage people to:

  • Respect one another regardless of differences.
  • Learn from one another.
  • Share knowledge and opportunities.
  • Support young people and vulnerable community members.
  • Protect and preserve African culture and history.
  • Resolve conflicts peacefully.
  • Stand against injustice and discrimination.
  • Practice compassion, forgiveness, and understanding.
  • Work collectively for the benefit of the community.

Learning From Our Great Black Leaders

The teachings and examples of great African and Black leaders have played an important role in shaping BLACOMO’s consciousness. Their struggles remind us of the importance of education, self-reliance, dignity, unity, justice, cultural pride, and community empowerment.

Through studying history, we came to understand that the progress enjoyed by future generations often begins with people who are willing to educate themselves, organize, sacrifice, and work for something greater than themselves.

This understanding continues to inspire BLACOMO today.

Preserving Our Heritage

Our African heritage is not something that belongs only to the past. It is a living source of identity, wisdom, resilience, and strength.

BLACOMO encourages people—especially young people—to learn about African history, traditions, languages, spirituality, music, arts, community values, and the contributions of our ancestors.

We believe that preserving our heritage strengthens confidence and helps younger generations understand that they come from a people with a long history of creativity, leadership, knowledge, resistance, and achievement.

Our Vision Moving Forward

From our humble beginnings in Central Freetown in 1992, the journey continues.

BLACOMO remains committed to using education, advocacy, community engagement, cultural awareness, psychosocial support, youth empowerment, and collective action to contribute to stronger communities in Sierra Leone.

We believe real development must include the development of the human being—the mind, character, consciousness, dignity, and ability of people to participate meaningfully in their communities.

Our message remains simple:

Know yourself. Know your history. Respect your heritage. Uplift one another. Protect human dignity. Work together.
