Our Ancestors Are With Us: A Guiding Light for BLACOMO.

Within BLACOMO — Black Consciousness Movement Sierra Leone, we recognize that our ancestors are not simply figures of the past. Their wisdom, sacrifices, values, courage, and teachings continue to guide us in the present.

Our ancestors walked before us, faced difficulties, protected families, built communities, preserved culture, and passed knowledge from one generation to the next. Their experiences remind us that we are part of something greater than ourselves.

We carry their memory in the way we live, the way we treat one another, the way we serve our communities, and the way we protect our African heritage.

A Guiding Light of Wisdom

Our ancestors remind us to seek knowledge and to think deeply before we act.

Their wisdom teaches us to value patience, discipline, responsibility, respect, humility, courage, and good character. When we learn from the lessons of those who came before us, we become better prepared to make wise decisions for ourselves, our families, and our communities.

We therefore say:

Know where you come from, so you can understand where you are going.

A Spirit of Love and Humanity

Our ancestors understood that community survival depended on people caring for one another.

Love was not only something spoken—it was demonstrated through sharing, protection, cooperation, hospitality, compassion, and responsibility.

BLACOMO continues this spirit by encouraging us to uplift rather than tear down, to support rather than abandon, and to seek peace and reconciliation instead of unnecessary division.

When we care for one another, we honour those who came before us.

Prosperity Is More Than Wealth

Prosperity is not only money or material possessions.

True prosperity includes:

  • Knowledge and education
  • Healthy families
  • Strong communities
  • Cultural pride
  • Peace and stability
  • Good character
  • Opportunities for young people
  • Respect for elders
  • Care for vulnerable people
  • Unity and cooperation
  • The ability to leave something meaningful for the next generation

Our ancestors planted seeds that many of us benefit from today. Our responsibility is to plant seeds for those who will come after us.

Togetherness Connects the Generations

The BLACOMO motto “Togetherness” reflects an important African principle: no individual succeeds entirely alone.

We are connected—to our ancestors, our families, our communities, and future generations.

Togetherness asks us to move beyond only thinking about “me” and to recognize the power of “we.”

When we share knowledge, encourage one another, forgive, cooperate, and work toward a common purpose, we strengthen the chain that connects past, present, and future.

Honouring Our Ancestors Through Action

Honouring our ancestors should be more than remembering their names. We honour them through the way we live.

We honour them when we:

Educate ourselves.
Protect our culture.
Respect humanity.
Serve our communities.
Support our youth.
Care for our elders.
Speak truth with wisdom.
Stand for justice.
Practice compassion.
Preserve unity.
And leave a better foundation for generations yet unborn.

Their sacrifices become meaningful when we continue the work.

The BLACOMO Message

Our ancestors are behind us as a source of memory.

Their wisdom is within us as a source of guidance.

Our communities are around us as a source of strength.

And future generations are ahead of us as our responsibility.

We walk forward carrying the lessons of yesterday while building the possibilities of tomorrow.
